Eight individuals journey to Ottawa for the AMO Annual General Meeting

The City of Burlington is set to take centre stage at the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Municipalities in Ontario (AMO) in Ottawa, from August 17th to 20th, 2025. The delegation, led by Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, will engage in strategic discussions with members of the provincial government and other key municipal stakeholders.

The Burlington delegation includes Ward 3 Councillor Rory Nisan, Ward 5 Councillor Paul Sharman, Ward 6 Councillor Angelo Bentivegna, CAO Curt Benson, Head of Corporate Affairs Leah Bortolotti, and Corporate Strategic Leads of Government Relations, Jayson Doll and Paul Szachlewicz.

Key discussion topics at the AMO meeting include traffic delays on the Burlington Skyway Bridge, the Mohawk College expansion in Burlington, expanded electricity infrastructure, establishing provincial policies to support Burlington's Community Planning Permit System (CPPS), Provincial land designations to protect Mount Nemo, and Provincial support to advocate for financial coordination between all three levels of government.

Advocacy at the AMO meeting will focus on housing affordability, protecting local greenspaces, providing predictable infrastructure and transit funding to municipalities, local economic growth, and skills development.

The delegation from the City of Burlington will advocate for Burlington's priorities with government officials, including cabinet ministers, MPPs, and industry stakeholders. One of the main issues is the need for expanded electricity infrastructure in Burlington to support growth around Major Transit Station Areas (MTSAs), but Burlington Hydro has not publicly disclosed details about their capacity.

Planning for the Mohawk College expansion in Burlington is well underway. The Ministries of Transportation and Natural Resources, as well as the Ministries of Energy and Mines, Finance, and Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, are involved in the discussions with the Burlington delegation.

However, it's important to note that while the bridge in question needs repair and maintenance, there's not much the province can do about it. Nevertheless, discussions about traffic delays on the Burlington Skyway Bridge will still be on the table.

Another crucial issue for Burlington is the protection of Mount Nemo. Provincial measures are needed to protect this significant natural landmark effectively. Leah Bortolotti, Head of Corporate Affairs, is part of the Burlington delegation, but her specific function within the delegation at the AMO meeting is not specified in the available information.

The Burlington delegation has been preparing for these strategic discussions, and they are hopeful for positive outcomes that will benefit the city and its residents.
