History remembers those who dared to challenge the darkness. The Ulma family, a seemingly ordinary Polish family, defied the Nazi regime by extending a helping hand to their persecuted Jewish neighbors. On March 24, 1944, this act of defiance led to their brutal murder at the hands of German soldiers.
Although unknown to many, the Ulma family played a significant role in the resistance movement during World War II. Hidden in the small village of Markowa in southeastern Poland, they provided shelter and protection to their Jewish neighbors, embodying the quiet courage shown by ordinary citizens throughout Europe.
The family, led by Józef and Wiktoria Ulma and their six children, made the courageous decision to hide their neighbors. This brave act was symbolic of the moral fortitude that persisted amidst widespread atrocities. On March 24, 1944, their act of heroism came to a devastating end. The Nazis discovered the hidden Jewish individuals and, in reprisal, executed Józef, Wiktoria (pregnant at the time), their children, and the eight Jewish individuals. This massacre served as a grim reminder of the lethal consequences faced by those who dared to resist the Nazi regime.
Yet, the Ulma family's tragic tale serves as a beacon of hope and a symbol of defiance. They have been posthumously recognized as "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem and beatified by Pope Francis. Their legacy stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of resistance and humanity in the face of evil.
Poland shines in the annals of World War II for its substantial contributions to the rescue of Jews from Nazi persecution. The nation's citizens have received the most titles of "Righteous Among the Nations," a recognition bestowed upon non-Jews who risked their lives to save their Jewish brethren. Despite the harshest penalties, including the threat of death for themselves and their families, a remarkable number of Poles demonstrated extraordinary courage and humanity by hiding and protecting their Jewish neighbors from extermination. Their acts of moral fortitude illuminate the profound impact that collective empathy and courage can have in challenging times.
"Even though helping Jews in occupied Poland was punishable by death, as nowhere else in Western Europe in countries occupied by fascist Germany, there were about a million Poles who helped their Jewish fellow citizens in various ways, often whole chains of people acted to save one person," President Duda stated during the commemoration ceremony.
The Rzeszów-Jasionka airport was named after the Ulma Family during the ceremony. President Duda acknowledged the significance of the location, stating, "since the Russian aggression against Ukraine, this airport in Jasionka has become a center of support for Ukraine in all possible ways; both military support, humanitarian support, and also political support, because this is where politicians from all over the world come and then continue their journey towards Kyiv. This is a place that today is a place that is really known in the world."
The Ulma family's story transcends national borders, reminding us of the power of individual actions to challenge tyranny and uphold human dignity. Their legacy underscores the importance of solidarity, bravery, and the protection of innocent lives in the face of adversity.
