Egyptian Pilot and Political Figure: Ahmed Shafik
Ahmed Shafik, a renowned figure in Egyptian politics, was born on November 25, 1941, in the bustling city of Cairo. After completing his education at Heliopolis Secondary School in Cairo, Shafik joined the Egyptian Air Force at the age of 21.
His military career spanned an impressive 40 years, during which he fought in several significant conflicts, including the October War in 1973, also known as the Yom Kippur War or 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Shafik also participated in the War of Attrition, which lasted from 1967 to 1970. Throughout his military career, he flew various types of aircraft and held important command positions. In 2002, he reached the pinnacle of his military career, becoming the Commander of the Egyptian Air Force.
However, the new political climate in his country was not conducive to his military career, and Shafik decided to leave the armed forces to pursue a career in politics. He earned a master's degree in military science and a PhD in "The National Strategy of Outer-Space" before embarking on this new path.
In 2002, Shafik became the head of Egypt’s newly established Ministry of Civil Aviation. In this role, he was responsible for restructuring EgyptAir, the national airline, and modernizing Egypt’s airports. His efforts led to significant improvements in Egypt’s civil aviation sector.
Later, Shafik served briefly as Egypt's prime minister in 2011 during a critical period of political transition. However, he resigned due to pressure from protestors.
In 2012, Shafik ran as an independent candidate in the Egyptian presidential election. Despite receiving 48.27% of the vote, he did not win the election. This marked the end of his political career in Egypt.
