Egypt to Free 14 Palestinian Prisoners, Including Hamas Militant, After Years in Detention
Egypt has agreed to release 14 Palestinian prisoners from its jails, following a request by senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar. The move, welcomed by Hamas, comes after years of detention under the former Mubarak regime.
Last week, al-Zahar met with Egyptian officials and demanded the release of the detainees. Despite this, 20 Palestinians will remain in Egyptian prisons, with their identities yet to be disclosed. The 14 prisoners set to be freed are expected to arrive in Gaza on Sunday.
Among those released is Ayman Nofal, a prominent member of Hamas' military wing Al-Qassam. He had previously escaped and returned to the Gaza Strip during the 25 January revolution, with the help of Egyptian locals. This is not the first time Egypt has released Palestinian prisoners; around 20 to 30 have been freed in the past.
Egypt's decision to release the 14 prisoners is a significant step, according to Hamas, which has expressed gratitude to the Egyptian authorities. However, the fate of the remaining 20 Palestinians in Egyptian prisons remains uncertain.
