Egypt Protests Erupt Over Appointment of Mubarak-Era PM
Protests erupted in Egypt after the appointment of Kamal Ganzouri, a former premier under Hosni Mubarak, as the new prime minister. Tens of thousands gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, rejecting the military's choice and demanding an end to army rule.
The appointment of Ganzouri, who is reportedly supported by the National Democratic Party (NDP), has reignited tensions. Protesters chanted slogans against Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of the military council, with some suggesting a delay in elections due to current conditions.
The brief clash on Saturday was the first since a truce ended a week of violent protests that left 41 people dead. The military council has announced that each stage of voting will be held over two days to ensure everyone can participate.
The appointment of Kamal Ganzouri has further deepened the divide between protesters and those who support the military council. Despite the military's efforts to include all voices, protesters continue to demand a swift transition to democracy and an end to army rule.
