Egypt Mediates Hamas-Fatah Talks for Palestinian Reconciliation
Egypt has stepped in to mediate talks between Hamas and Fatah, aiming for Palestinian reconciliation. Egypt will not directly participate in the negotiations but will allow Palestinians to decide on an agreement themselves. This comes after a previous attempt at reconciliation in 2009 was indefinitely postponed.
The talks, which began in Gaza on Sunday, are being led by a Hamas delegation headed by Mahmoud al-Zahar and Khalil al-Hayya. They met with Egyptian officials, including Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi, during a visit to Egypt. Al-Zahar expressed determination for reconciliation, marking a significant step towards unity.
This is not the first time Egypt has mediated such talks. In the past, under former President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt refused to discuss Hamas' reservations regarding the agreement. However, the current Egyptian government has taken a more active role, hosting several rounds of talks between the rival factions.
The ongoing talks between Hamas and Fatah, mediated by Egypt, signal a renewed effort towards Palestinian reconciliation. With Egypt acting as a neutral mediator, the parties involved hope to reach an agreement that respects the reservations of all factions and paves the way for unity.
