Egypt Freezes Assets of Ex-Officials Linked to Mubarak
Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority, led by Assem al-Gohari, has frozen the assets of several high-ranking officials linked to former President Hosni Mubarak. The Cairo Court of Appeal confirmed this decision on June 30, 2022.
The officials involved are former Speaker of the People's Assembly Fathi Sorour, former Speaker of the Shura Council Safwat al-Sherif, former Chief of the Presidential Staff Zakaria Azmi, and former Housing Minister Ibrahim Suleiman. The assets of their wives and children have also been frozen, and they are barred from using these funds.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the wealth of these officials grew at an unreasonable pace, potentially due to exploiting their political positions. The court also approved the revelation of secret accounts, deposits, and transactions belonging to these individuals and their spouses.
The freezing of assets is a significant step in Egypt's ongoing efforts to combat corruption. It sends a clear message that those who abuse their power for personal gain will face consequences. The court's decision ensures transparency and accountability.
