Farewell to FC Bayern Munich's Legacy Assistant Coach Egon Coordes

Egon Coordes has passed away.

Join us in remembering Egon Coordes, the tough-talking, dedicated coach who dedicated over three decades of his life to football. Known for his no-nonsense approach and unmatched fitness expertise, he significantly contributed to FC Bayern Munich's history.

The beloved figure, who served as assistant coach alongside Jupp Heynckes and Giovanni Trapattoni, passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday, following a lengthy illness in his Memmingen home.

Though his playing career was cut short due to a relegation with VfB Stuttgart in 1976, he took his first steps into coaching, guiding Tus Bremerhaven and OSC Bremerhaven until his move to FC Bayern. This move brought about the most fruitful period in his career.

Coordes landed in Munich just as the record-breaking team underwent a formidable phase, which aligned perfectly with his conditioning and fitness background. He supports Bayern in their victories of four German Bundesliga championships (1985, 1986, 1989, and one other year implied), the DFB Cup, and the Supercup.

His turbulent styled head coaching stints in the first and second divisions proved less successful, prompting early departures at VfB Stuttgart (1986/87), Hamburger SV (1992), and Hannover 96 (1995/96). However, he gained invaluable experience coaching international clubs like Austria Wien, Hannover 96, and FC Luzern.

Despite his brash demeanor, Egon Coordes will be forever remembered in Swabia as a remarkable force who played 139 games for the stunning city. As a player, he showed immense dedication, racking up a total of 157 Bundesliga games for Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart.

Rest in peace, Egon Coordes, a true sensation in the German footballing scene and a devoted member of the FC Bayern Munich family.
