Education department employee dismissed following remarks on Charlie Kirk's demise being warranted as justifiable

In a series of recent events, Katie Allen, a former employee of the Kansas Department of Education and a former member of the USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden school board, has found herself at the centre of a social media storm.

The controversy began with a post on social media that referenced the murder of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk. The post, which appeared to show a photo of Kirk's wife draped over his open casket, sparked a heated debate. Allen commented on the post, stating "well deserved," a comment that she later apologised for and deleted.

Following her online comment, Allen reported receiving online threats. In response, she expressed concern about the violence and current discontent in America.

In a turn of events, Allen was subsequently fired from her position at the Kansas Department of Education. The school board, where Allen also previously served, is set to discuss "member conduct" during its meeting on Wednesday, September 23, 2025. The agenda item for "member behavior" was added to the school board's meeting on Monday.

Despite the controversy, Allen has stated that she will continue to advocate for common-sense laws to keep children and the community safe. She has expressed her concern about the cost of gun deaths for the Second Amendment, a topic that was also included in the controversial social media post.

As the events unfold, the USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden school board and the community await the outcome of the discussion on member conduct. Allen's comments and actions have sparked a debate about appropriate online behaviour and the role of advocacy in public service.
