Edmonton braces for 20 cm of snow on Christmas Eve with stricter parking bans
Edmonton is preparing for another round of heavy snow as forecasts predict up to 20 cm of snowfall on Christmas Eve. The city has warned drivers that a Phase 2 parking ban could soon take effect on residential and industrial streets, with fines of $250 for those who fail to move their vehicles in time.
The city recently completed a five-day Phase 1 parking ban, focusing on major roads and bus routes. Around 200 snowplows worked to clear these key areas, while crews spread a mix of sand and salt to improve road traction. Despite the efforts, some drivers ignored the restrictions, forcing teams to re-clear sections after smaller snowfalls.
Enforcement was strict during the first phase, with 113 tickets issued, one vehicle towed, and a single warning given for blocking snow-clearing lanes. Meanwhile, the city prioritised school zones by removing large snow piles to ensure safer access. With more snow expected, officials may now activate a Phase 2 ban. This would extend restrictions to residential and industrial areas, requiring drivers to relocate parked cars or face penalties.
The potential Phase 2 ban aims to keep roads clear as Edmonton braces for another winter storm. Drivers must stay alert for updates, as non-compliance will result in fines. Crews remain on standby to handle the forecasted snowfall and maintain safe travel conditions.
