Editorial Correspondence: The Refusal of Retirement Benefits for Trans Troops Leaves Everyone Feeling Deceived

In the Voices section, we discuss a recent development that has left many transgender troops feeling betrayed and devastated. The U.S. Air Force has denied early retirement applications submitted by service members with 15 to 18 years of service who are being separated due to policy changes.

This policy reversal affects individuals like Logan Ireland, a master sergeant who has served for 15 years, including a deployment in Afghanistan. Ireland, from Santa Monica, put his life on the line to protect our freedoms, yet finds himself denied the retirement benefits he was expecting.

The Air Force justifies this decision by citing the Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA), a policy originally created during the 1990s drawdown and last broadly used in 2013. However, the Air Force spokesperson and acting assistant secretary of the Air Force for manpower and reserve affairs have not explicitly explained why they are applying TERA policy conservatively, restricting early retirement to avoid granting partial retirement benefits to those under 20 years of service without an approved exemption.

As a result, affected transgender Airmen and Guardians will not receive retirement pay but may receive voluntary separation pay. They also retain bonus pay earned before May 15, but all remaining service obligations will be waived. This policy change has left those who had counted on early retirement as a form of compensation for the early end to their military careers feeling let down.

The controversy surrounding this policy is not new, with some finding it morally unacceptable. Critics argue that it is a sacrifice of those who have risked making the greatest sacrifice of all, while others see it as punishing, as it denies full benefits to those who have served.

This issue is not isolated, as it also reflects a larger debate about the treatment of transgender individuals in the military. Meanwhile, other topics such as UCLA's fight against Trump's "attempted extortion" and criticism towards the Republican Party are also generating heated discussions.

As always, we welcome your letters to the editor, sharing your thoughts on these and other topics. Let's continue the conversation.
