In the heart of the United States, two American Jews, Edward M. Bialack from Woodland Hills and Deborah Regan from Palos Verdes Peninsula, have voiced their concerns over the recent events in the Middle East.

Edward M. Bialack, who was raised amid cries of 'never again,' finds himself questioning Israel's actions in Gaza. In a letter penned in response to Israel's ground offensive, he expressed surprise and shame, asking how it went from 'never again' to 'never mind.'

Similarly, Deborah Regan, who is not directly involved in the conflict, having no relatives or close ties to either side, has expressed concern about the use of the term 'genocide' being applied only to Israel's actions in Gaza. She values the contributions of both Jewish and Arab non-war cultures to her life.

The recent article on the website accuses Israel of genocide in Gaza ('U.N. commission of inquiry accuses Israel of genocide in Gaza,' Sept. 16). Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition defines genocide as the deliberate and systemic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group.

It is important to note that Hamas, a political and military group with the goal of the destruction of Israel, did not warn the Palestinians to evacuate on Oct. 7, 2023. On that day, Hamas carried out surprise killings of 1,195 people and captured 251 hostages.

Israel is determined to survive and eliminate Hamas, which is considered political genocide. However, the cost of Israel's actions is the destruction of Gaza, a major base of operations for Hamas.

The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since 2022, launched the offensive in Gaza in September 2023. Israel has warned the Palestinians to evacuate, but it is unclear if these warnings were heeded.

Vivien Irving from Huntington Beach might also have her own thoughts on this matter, but as of now, there is no information available about her stance on the issue.

Both Edward M. Bialack and Deborah Regan's letters do not contain any advertisements, reflecting their sincere concerns about the situation in Gaza.
