Ed Sheeran unexpectedly graces the stage at Fleadh Cheoil, bringing excitement to the crowd.

In an unexpected turn of events, global superstar Ed Sheeran made a surprise appearance at this year's Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford. On August 5, Sheeran, known for his mix of pop and folk music, performed a secret gig at The Sky & The Ground pub, delighting fans with a mix of his biggest hits and Irish traditional tunes alongside acclaimed Irish musicians.

The unplanned performance came as a delightful surprise, especially considering that Sheeran took time off from his sold-out European Mathematics tour to appear at the traditional pub on day three of the festival. The crowd was treated to renditions from his third studio album, as well as collaborations with Irish bands Beoga, Biird, Amble, and Aaron Rowe.

The intimate performance, warmly received, highlighted Sheeran's strong Irish cultural ties and influences. Pub owner Caolán Barron expressed his delight at hosting the Wexford-born Sheeran, who has frequently visited Ireland throughout his childhood and identifies strongly with Irish culture despite being raised in England. Sheeran's childhood breaks were often spent in Ireland rather than on beach holidays, reflecting his deep roots in the country.

Social media and videos captured the magical moment, showing Sheeran's natural ease and connection with the crowd and fellow musicians. He even sang popular hits like "Nancy Mulligan" and performed a cover of "Wild Mountain Thyme" with trad group Biird, reinforcing his Irish identity and love for traditional Irish music during the festival.

Rumours of Sheeran's attendance at the festival had been circulating since last week, but organisers initially dismissed them as "just rumours." However, Sheeran's arrival was announced "a little bit in advance," causing an influx of attendees hoping to catch a glimpse of the star.

The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, with its rich tradition and deep connection with the Irish people, provided a fitting backdrop for Sheeran's surprise performance. President Michael D Higgins, who officially opened the festival for the last time as President, echoed this sentiment, stating that the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann has a special place in the hearts of the Irish people.

Organisers expect more than 750,000 attendees throughout the week, with the estimated attendance on Sunday being between 80,000 and 100,000. This year's attendance is higher than last year's numbers, a testament to the enduring appeal of the festival and Sheeran's surprise performance.

Sheeran, who was brought up in Suffolk, England, has a large Irish family and has often spoken about his love for Ireland. His surprise appearance at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025 is a testament to his deep connection with the country and his commitment to preserving and promoting Irish culture. He even sang "Perfect" for crowds outside who failed to get a spot inside, a gesture that further endeared him to his Irish fans.

Attendees at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann were treated to a surprise concert by Ed Sheeran, who showcased his affinity for traditional Irish music. During his intimate performance, Sheeran collaborated with Irish bands, performing renditions of Irish tunes alongside popular hits.
