Ecuador’s flower boom begins as Valentine’s Day exports take flight

Ecuador’s flower industry is preparing for Valentine’s Day 2026 as the countdown begins. Growers in Cayambe and Cotopaxi have benefited from ideal weather, setting the stage for a strong harvest. The first shipments are due to leave on January 22, bound for global markets.

Weather conditions this season have been near perfect for flower cultivation. In Cayambe, daytime temperatures averaged 17°C, dropping to -0.8°C at night, while Cotopaxi saw ranges from 14.6°C to -1.8°C. High solar radiation has also boosted growth, helping flowers accumulate more growing degree days.

Producers are now focused on ensuring roses reach international buyers in top condition. Marketers have already started pre-booking orders and securing cargo space on flights. Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport stands ready to manage the increased export volume. Last year, Ecuador shipped 28,779 tons of flowers, marking an 8.7% rise from 2024. A slight cooldown before harvest is expected to further enhance quality, giving growers confidence ahead of the peak season.

The first flower shipments will depart on January 22, heading to major global hubs. With favorable weather and strong preparation, Ecuador aims to meet high demand for Valentine’s Day. The industry’s growth in 2025 suggests another successful export season lies ahead.
