Notorious drug kingpin taken into custody, about a year after breaking out of prison in Ecuador. - Ecuador seizes infamous drug lord from detention after over a year in imprisonment
In a major bust, the infamous drug kingpin, José Adolfo Macías, also known as "Fito," was apprehended recently following a relentless 17-month manhunt. The crime boss, responsible for established connections with international drug cartels and a brutal reign of terror, was finally apprehended in a covert operation led by Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa.
In a post on their online service X, Noboa expressed satisfaction: "We've been tirelessly working towards Macías' extradition to the United States. We await their response now" (Noboa, 2025). The crime boss was taken into custody for a series of charges, including drug trafficking, conspiracy, and crimes related to firearms, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. If found guilty, he faces life imprisonment.
Macías heads the notorious Los Choneros gang, which has collaborated with the Mexican Sinaloa cartel to control key drug trafficking routes between South America and the U.S., as per the U.S. Attorney's Office accusations.
The high-security prison escape of Macías, which occurred in January 2024, ignited a wave of escalating gang violence, leading to a nationwide state of emergency declared by Noboa. Retaliation from the drug cartels included detonating car bombs, kidnapping police officers, and leaving several civilian casualties.
A notable incident occurred during the escape hype - heavily armed, masked men stormed a studio of Ecuador's state-owned TV channel TC during a live broadcast in early January. Several journalists and employees were taken hostage temporarily. Unfortunately, the prosecutor leading the investigation into the hostage-taking was later murdered, fueling the tensions between the drug cartels and the government.
Once a relatively peaceful and stable nation, Ecuador has become a hub for international drug trafficking in recent years, leading to a drastic surge in violent crime. The prisons in Ecuador have experienced repeated violent clashes between rival gangs, particularly after the escape of the notorious drug lord.
The newly elected Noboa had campaigned on promises to curb violence and regain control of the prisons. Macías, who had been incarcerated since 2011 for organized crime, drug trafficking, and murder, was under suspicion of ordering the murder of promising presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who advocated against corruption as a journalist before his candidacy.
