Economy: Disregard Adesina at Your Peril, Sani Suggests to Presidency

Umar Sani, a well-known chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has voceD his displeasure over the Presidency's dismissal of African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Akinwumi Adesina's economic analysis.

As reported by our esteemed digital publication, Adesina, during a public event, criticized the current administration's economic policies, stating that Nigerians have endured a drop in living standards compared to the 1960s.

Following this, the Presidency, through President Bola Tinubu's spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, challenged Adesina's statements, deeming them inaccurate.

In an express statement, Sani took issue with the Presidency's dismissal of Adesina's economic analysis, asserting that it is essential to heed such assessments, as they provide insights into the consequences of the government's policies on the nation's citizens.

"Nigeria is teetering on the edge of a political and economic precipice. Once filled with the hope of post-colonial growth, the country now faces crippling poverty, rampant inflation, and widespread public dissatisfaction. According to a recent World Bank report, a staggering 56% of Nigerians, approximately 129 million people, live below the national poverty line—a considerable increase from the 2018 figures. Urban poverty has doubled, inflation surpasses 30%, and despite well-intentioned structural reforms, they have ultimately exacerbated hardships.

"Dr. Akinwumi Adesina's remarks at this critical juncture were not a political attack; they were a data-driven evaluation based on the harsh realities faced by millions of Nigerians. His comments echoed the World Bank's statistics, showing that rural poverty now exceeds 75%. Projections suggest that Nigeria, with its abundance of resources, faces one of the world's steepest battles against poverty," he said.

Sani suggested that Onanuga's rebuttal was rooted in outdated data and data that doesn't accurately reflect the state of the nation. He emphasized that the quality of life, institutional coherence, and social infrastructure were stronger in the immediate post-independence era compared to the present day.

"Adesina's appeal was driven by patriotism, and it should not be disregarded. His call for the government to prioritize policies geared towards alleviating poverty is crucial. His outstanding leadership and innovative ideas at the African Development Bank, which have earned him the trust of African presidents and global leaders alike, make him an authority whose insights deserve attention," he added.
