Soaring Oil Prices to Hit $100 and More: Experts Warn Aloof US Interaction in Iran-Israel Conflict
Economist predicts drastic increase in oil prices if U.S. engages in conflict
Hold onto your wallets, folks! According to experts, if the United States gets involved in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, oil prices could skyrocket past the $100 mark. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Gulf of Oman with the Persian Gulf and serving as a critical oil transportation route, is of particular concern.
Manuel Frondel, an energy expert at the RWI-Leibniz Institute, warned the "Rheinische Post" that an increase in oil and gas prices is a possible consequence. He states, "If the US actively engages in the conflict and it escalates, oil and gas prices could spike. This depends on how long the conflict lasts and whether the Strait of Hormuz is blocked during the conflict."
Already, the price of the Brent variety of oil has increased from $68 to $76 per barrel, Frondel notes. He adds, "A fifth of the world's oil exports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, including those of the Gulf states. Iran itself plays a minor role, as it only covers two percent of global oil demand."
War Anxiety Amid Nuclear Fear
Ominously, Omid Nouripour, Vice President of the Bundestag, has again appealed for de-escalation amid the brewing conflict between Iran and Israel. Nouripour expressed concern about the potential disastrous consequences of a nuclear accident beyond Iran's borders if the conflict continues. He stated, "The danger of potential radioactive leakage far beyond Iran would have devastating consequences for humans and the environment."
Nouripour criticized the Iranian leadership, as well. He stated, "The population lives in constant uncertainty, as the regime ensures no reliable civil defense through systematic mismanagement and lets central supply systems collapse." He also called out the Iranian government for ramping up its repression, including arrests and internet shutdowns to stifle protests and political opposition.
While Nouripour acknowledged the threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran, he emphasized Israel's right to defend itself. "The destruction of Israel has been Iranian state doctrine since 1979, and Israel has the right to defend its existence and security," he said.
In light of the proceedings, US involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict could lead to a flurry of unpredictable consequences, including substantial oil price increases and compounding regional instability.
