Ministry of Economics in Spotlight During Political Strife: Habeck's Remarks at Handover Ceremony - Economic Ministry in Midst of Political Turmoil: Habeck Discusses Transfer of Office

The key to democracy remaining resilient is a strong economy, according to Robert Habeck, the man who's just stepped down from the Federal Ministry of Economics. Without a steady job and financial security, it's tough for folks to keep their chin up in these testing times. And right now, Germany's struggling to keep its head above water.

Habeck's farewell speech was met with cheers from his staff at the Federal Ministry of Economics - a testament to the sweat he's put in during his tenure. In turn, he thanked them for their passion, saying the place had become a second home to him.

His successor, Katherina Reiche, was full of praise for Habeck too. She acknowledged the challenging times he faced when taking over the ministry, right after the pandemic fallout and an energy crisis triggered by Russia's attack on Ukraine. "The workload was nearly unbearable," she admitted, butHabeck managed to steer the ship through the storm.

Still, despite his hard work, Germany's economy is in its third year of recession. Reiche was candid about the need to reduce energy costs for consumers and businesses. "We've made significant strides in climate protection, but we need to tame the rising system costs," she said, adding she wants the ministry to become the government's conscience again.

Reiche was sworn in on Tuesday, just after Friedrich Merz (CDU) was elected Chancellor in a second round. She spent the last decade working in the economy, initially as CEO of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU) from 2015 to 2019. Since 2000, she's headed Westenergie, an energy service provider owned by the Eon Group.
