World Cup Issues with Eberl: Demands and Transfer Burden - Eberl's Displeasure at the World Cup Exhibition
The Club World Cup in the U.S. isn't all fun and games for Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl. While he's rooting for the team, his mind is preoccupied with the transfer market, especially in Europe. The never-ending question on everyone's lips: What's next?
Eberl still has some tweaking to do for the upcoming season. No matter where he goes, transfer speculations follow him like a shadow. Rumors about potential departures and new star players become a constant in his daily life. But when will things finally come to fruition?
Even after the opening game in Cincinnati, Eberl suggests there's still plenty of time. "What's the day today? And how many days more till the transfer window closes? Sixty days left," he jokes.
It's all part of the business for Eberl, but he's not a fan of the constant transfer rumors and uncertain players on the market. This includes big names like Kingsley Coman, Min-jae Kim, Sacha Boey, Serge Gnabry, or João Palhinha, who have all been connected to potential moves.
The current season has already seen some changes. The acquisitions of national players Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof, both for free, have been positive additions to the team. However, three attackers, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, and the once- promising striker Mathys Tel have all moved on. Tel was sold to Tottenham Hotspur in a permanent deal after a loan spell for around 35 million.
A Stern Response for Kimmich
The purchase side needs more attention, especially up front. Eberl and former sports director Christoph Freund both recognized this, with Freund putting it bluntly: "Our intention is to strengthen ourselves and bring in quality." Joshua Kimmich shared a similar sentiment but received a sharp rebuke from Eberl: "Jo is out there on the field – it's my job to take care of stuff off it."
While Sacha Boey and even Kingsley Coman have been impressive during their time on the field, transfer questions can sometimes be resolved there. Boey demonstrated his potential as a third-choice right-back with a goal and a strong performance against Auckland City. Coman, who has been with the club since 2015 and has two more years left on his contract, also showed his skill with two goals against an opponent that, admittedly, was not the toughest competition.
The Injury-Prone Coman
Despite his impressive performance, Coman's injury history remains a concern. Eberl and coach Vincent Kompany have both spoken highly of Coman in discussions about his future with the club. "Coman delivers when it counts. He's an exceptional player who had a stellar season last year, in my opinion. And he's been healthy, which is crucial for him," said Eberl.
Coach Kompany wants to steer clear of transfer talk during the World Cup, but he did acknowledge Coman's contributions to the team's success. "Coman's quality should not be overlooked. When discussions focus on the total number of his goals – 20, 15 – we should keep in mind that he scores crucial goals for this club," said Kompany. His most iconic goal remains the winning goal in the 2020 Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. "If he stays healthy, we have a top-notch winger," said Kompany.
In the world of Bayern, the buying and selling list seems to be in perpetual motion.
