EasyJet flight diverted to Rome after power bank found in checked luggage
An easyJet flight from Egypt to the UK made an unexpected stop in Rome on Tuesday evening. The diversion happened after a power bank was found charging inside checked luggage. Passengers initially feared the worst before learning the cause of the detour.
Flight EZY2618 was travelling from Hurghada to London Luton when the crew detected a potential safety issue. Following standard procedures, the pilot diverted the plane to Rome Fiumicino as a precaution. The aircraft landed without incident, and all passengers disembarked normally.
Passenger Paul Casterton later described the sudden change in direction and rapid descent, which left many on board anxious. Relief came when authorities confirmed the problem was a charging power bank—not an explosive device. Portable chargers and lithium-ion batteries are banned from checked baggage on international flights due to fire hazards. They are, however, permitted in carry-on luggage. EasyJet arranged hotel stays, meals, and refreshments for those affected while the situation was resolved. The airline issued an apology for the disruption and thanked passengers for their patience during the delay.
The flight resumed its journey to London after the issue was addressed. Passengers received support from easyJet throughout the ordeal. The incident highlighted the importance of following safety rules for electronic devices on flights.
