Eastward Potential Seen for Cavaliers and Donovan Mitchell: Can They Deliver on Promising Shore?
The Cleveland Cavaliers had a remarkable start to the 2024-25 season, setting a 15-game winning streak. This impressive run was marked by the acquisition of Lonzo Ball from the Memphis Grizzlies, in exchange for Isaac Okoro.
The team's roster was further bolstered by the addition of Larry Nance Jr. as a free agent. However, the offseason moves raised concerns about wing depth and the consistency of some players in the playoffs.
The regular season saw standout performances from several players. Evan Mobley, the Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-NBA, made a significant improvement, earning him a spot in the starting lineup. Donovan Mitchell, who finished fifth in MVP voting and made First Team All-NBA, also shone, spending his fourth season with the Cavaliers.
Unfortunately, the team faced some injuries during the playoffs. Both Mobley and De'Andre Hunter were injured in the first game of the series against the Indiana Pacers, while Mitchell sprained his ankle in Game 4. Darius Garland, who missed the first two games of the series, wasn't at his best when he returned.
Despite these setbacks, the Cavaliers managed to take the series to a decisive Game 7. However, they ultimately lost to the Pacers, ending their season with a 4-1 loss in the second round.
The team's record for the season was 64-18, with a net rating of +9.2, which was better than the Utah Jazz team that lost in the second round of the playoffs in 2020-21. Kenny Atkinson was awarded Coach of the Year for his leadership.
The 2024-25 season was a promising one for the Cavaliers, despite the early playoff exit. With a young and talented roster, the team looks poised for a strong comeback in the following seasons. However, the team will have to navigate the absence of Max Strus, who will be out for at least the first month of the 2025-26 season due to a foot injury.
Jaylon Tyson, who showed potential in summer league, is currently the 10th man on the team, providing depth and competition for spots in the rotation. As the team prepares for the new season, the focus will be on maintaining the team's chemistry and addressing any concerns about wing depth to ensure a strong playoff run.
