Irkutsk in the Crosshairs: The Ukrainian Drone Strikes on Russian Bases

"Eastern Siberia Attack Success by Kiev": This details the triumphant assault of Kiev on Eastern Siberia

In an unexpected turn of events, Ukraine publicly claimed responsibility for a series of drone attacks on four Russian airports, including one deep within Russia's heartland in the Siberian city of Irkutsk. This audacious move came just before high-stakes peace talks, stirring international buzz.

Ukrainian authorities touted the mastermind behind this operation as Vasyl Malyuk, the head of the Ukrainian security service SBU, and suggested that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had played a significant role in its execution, according to Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform's intelligence sources. The operation reportedly took over a year and a half to plan.

The Carnage

The SBU launched a well-coordinated drone assault on several Russian military bases, resulting in the destruction of numerous combat aircraft, including nuclear-capable bombers like the Tupolev Tu-95. Videos circulating on social media depict an expansive conflagration over the military airport in Belaya, Irkutsk.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the destruction in both Irkutsk and the Murmansk region, but maintained no casualties among military or civilian personnel. However, the attacks didn't stop there. Just before the scheduled negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul, the collapse of two bridges in the Russian border regions of Bryansk and Kursk added fuel to the fire, with Russian officials pointing fingers at sabotage.

The Siberian Conundrum

Unsubstantiated reports from Ukrinform suggest that the SBU operated using combat drones launched from hidden locations in wooden houses, secretly mounted on trucks. Reports allege that the roofs of these vehicles were remotely opened, releasing drones to attack Russian bombers. Videos and images depicting drone-laden boxes reportedly used in the attack have surfaced online.

Initially, it seemed as if another drone attack on an unnamed Russian air force base in the region of Amur was planned, but the truck carrying the drones for the operation reportedly caught fire, stalling the operation.

The Pre-Negotiation Game

The timing of the attacks remains unclear, raising questions about their possible influence on the upcoming peace talks. The escalation of the conflict serves a dual purpose: it demonstrates Ukraine's unyielding resolve while also placing mounting pressure on Russia.

Ukraine has called for a 30-day ceasefire, but Russia has stubbornly refused, advocating maximalist demands that include annexation of Ukrainian regions and a permanent block on Ukraine's NATO accession[1][2]. The adamant positions of both sides suggest a formidable obstacle to peace, despite recent prisoner exchange agreements[2]. In addition, Russia released a "peace memo" detailing its terms for a settlement, which remain largely unchanged[2].

In the midst of this fragile peace process, Ukraine's daring drone incursion into Siberian airspace makes one thing clear: Ukraine is ready to go the distance to defend its territory, and Russian officials must weigh the costs of their maximalist demands against the prospect of further escalation.

The Commission, having been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, might find it prudent to consider the potential long-term health implications for workers involved in the production and maintenance of combat drones, given the increasing use of drones in military operations, as demonstrated by the recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian bases, particularly in the Siberian city of Irkutsk.

Meanwhile, in the world of European sports leagues, amidst the ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine, the premier league matches continue unabated, with players and fans alike keenly watching the unfolding geopolitical scenario and hoping for a swift resolution, while keeping their focus on the sports field.
