Crisis in Eastern German Chemistry - 'Chemistry Summit' Planned in Bohlen - Eastern Germany’s chemical industry fights for survival at crisis summit

The chemical industry in eastern Germany is under severe strain, with production running at just 70 percent of capacity. To tackle the crisis, regional leaders will gather at a summit in Böhlen, near Leipzig, on December 15 to push for urgent changes.

Around 63,000 people work in the region’s chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. But job security is now at risk, as U.S. giant Dow plans to close parts of its Schkopau and Böhlen plants by the end of December 2027.

The December 15 meeting marks a critical step for the region’s chemical sector. If adopted, the demands could help stabilize production and prevent further plant closures. The outcome will directly affect thousands of workers and local economies.
