Easter gridlock paralyzes Gotthard Tunnel with hour-long delays
Heavy traffic disrupted Easter weekend travel on the A2 motorway near the Gotthard Tunnel. Long queues formed in both directions, causing delays of over an hour. The Federal Roads Office had earlier warned of congestion as holidaymakers headed south. On Friday, a ten-kilometre tailback built up on the A2 in the southbound direction near the Gotthard Tunnel. Drivers faced slow progress as Easter holiday traffic intensified.
The following morning, another ten-kilometre jam formed at the Gotthard North Portal. The backup stretched between Erstfeld and Göschenen, with waiting times reaching up to 90 minutes. Authorities did not confirm how many vehicles were caught in the congestion. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) had already cautioned motorists about potential delays. Their alerts came ahead of the busy Easter travel period, urging drivers to plan extra time for journeys.
The jams affected travellers for two consecutive days, with peak delays on Saturday morning. The slowdowns followed official warnings about heavy holiday traffic. No further disruptions have been reported since the weekend.
