East versus West Kazakhstan: A Comedian's Perspective (VIDEO)

Stand-up comedian Yevgeny 'Yeugie' Chebatkov confesses that his indifference towards basketball vanished after befriending rapper Samson Araqelyan, the basketball ambassador of Mangystau.

"We'd shoot the breeze at the 'Astana' matches, then became pals," recalled Yevgeny with a grin. "I’ve always admired Samson as an artist, but now I admire him as a person too. He’s not just a basketball fan; he's a basketball enthusiast. The buzz he radiates is intoxicating. Basketball has climbed up my ladder of favorite sports," he admitted.

"Mangystau Locals are Wine to My Water"

Three times in Aqtau – the region's sights still elude Yevgeny, according to pictures; but, the locals have left a lasting impression on him.

"People in Ust-Kamenogorsk keep their cards close, emotionally distant. Here, the locals keep it real, no hidden agendas. It's a bit of a culture shock at first. But then you learn it's refreshing – no pretenses, no BS. And yes, Samson has been my guide – I'm like his apprentice," he laughs.

"Be a Beacon of Goodness"

When asked about Aqtau's lack of sports facilities, Yevgeny's response was heartfelt.

"Building a great life for your children isn't about waiting for someone else to do it. Take the first step — no matter who you are. What matters isn't your title or address; it's your actions," he said earnestly.
