East Ukraine faces mounting anxiety as Trump contemplates handing over certain regions to Russia

In the heart of eastern Ukraine, the proposed land deal discussed at the 2025 Alaska summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has sparked concerns and uncertainties among residents, particularly in the town of Sloviansk.

Taisiya, a resident of Sloviansk, is anxious about the potential land deal, fearing it could lead to people giving away their homes. The proposal centers on "land swaps" that would see Ukraine cede territory in eastern Ukraine controlled or claimed by Russia, including towns like Sloviansk.

Mykhailo, a local journalist, expresses "panic" about the possibility of having to leave Sloviansk. The potential impact on Sloviansk and other towns in Donetsk is significant: these locations are currently vital for Ukraine’s defense lines. Relinquishing them to Russia would involve uprooting tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians, and afford Russia greater leverage for future offensives in the region.

Ukrainian officials have expressed concern over recent Russian advances near Dobropilia and the vulnerability of their positions in Donetsk, highlighting the strategic importance of holding these towns. European allies have been wary about any deal involving territorial concessions, emphasizing that Ukraine’s borders must not be changed by force.

Meanwhile, in Kyiv, Natalia and Sviatoslav had moved their family to the capital to be further from the frontline. However, tragedy struck their family when Sofia, who was three months pregnant and due to give birth in Sloviansk, was killed in an airstrike on an apartment block. The family had spoken the night before Sofia died, with her expressing her desire to return to Sloviansk to share the news of her pregnancy.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine is "ready to work together with President Trump," but has quashed the idea of any territory concessions. Ludmila, who was injured by a landmine, finds little solace in diplomacy and believes politicians lie.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty, life in Sloviansk continues. Across the town, locals like Taisiya and Natalia and Sviatoslav are providing food and water aid to those in need. The train from Kyiv arrives to air raid sirens in Kramatorsk, the de facto capital of Ukrainian held Donetsk. Russian drone attacks are regular in Kramatorsk, a bustling town where civilian life sustains among the military who are based there.

The proposed Ukraine land deal is a complex issue with far-reaching implications. As diplomats and world leaders continue to discuss the matter, the people of Sloviansk and other towns in Donetsk wait with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution that preserves their homes and their future.
