Gear Up and Get Ready! After a thirteen-year hiatus, the grandest cycling event, the Tour de France, is gearing up for a spectacular start in the heart of Eastern Germany. The ambitious plan, masterminded by the freshly formed "Grand Depart Germany" association, has earned the support of German Cycling and is set to kick some major action in the 40th anniversary year of German unity.

A Blast for the Region! "This is a big bang for the region," enthused Rudolf Scharping, German Cycling's honorary president, at the recent presentation in Leipzig.

The proposed tour itinerary includes:- Stage 1: An adrenaline-pumping, inspiring journey from Dresden to Gera via the picturesque Ore Mountains region, showcasing the legendary Steile Wand of Meerane as a symbolic nod to the iconic Peace Race.- Stage 2: A thrilling time trial from Halle to Leipzig, testing the skills and grit of the cyclists.- Stage 3: A heart-pounding run from Erfurt to Magdeburg, encapsulating the essence of Eastern Germany's rugged beauty.

Financing FactorThe projected costs for hosting the event are around 20 million euros, but the organizers are optimistic about generating substantial revenues from tourism, ranging from 150 to 200 million euros. They plan to mainly rely on support from business partners, sponsors, and even drawing from football club RB Leipzig's well-heeled sponsor, Red Bull, known for its prominent role in the cycling world. The public sector's sports promotion funds are not expected to suffer financially.

Political BackingThe ambitious project has garnered written endorsements from the minister-presidents of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, highlighting the strong political support it enjoys. The next step is to engage in talks with the Tour de France organizers, Amaury Sport Organization (ASO), with initial discussions anticipated by summer. The opportunity promises a boost for regional development and a unifying narrative for a shared European future.
