Butere Girls High School Aims for East Africa Basketball Title
Butere Girls High School, the reigning national basketball champions in Kenya, are setting their sights on a new challenge – the East Africa FEASSSA games. Coach Chris Odeke has directed all energies towards the 5X5 team in pursuit of the East Africa title, a strategic decision aimed at achieving cohesion and peak performance in the regional competition.
The school's top players, including National MVP Mary Awino, captain Wangui, Chelsea Onamu, Trixy Akinyi, Yvonne Sheryl, and Rihanna Mercy, have been included in the 5X5 team. These key players will be crucial in Butere's bid for regional success.
Butere Girls High School is no stranger to the FEASSSA games, having participated four times before. However, they did not participate in the games in 2019. The school's last victory at the FEASSSA games was in 2016.
In preparation for the upcoming games, Coach Odeke has learned valuable lessons. He has emphasised the importance of training with referees in mind, avoiding overconfidence, and strengthening all departments. These lessons have been instrumental in the team's preparation for the East Africa challenge.
The school's 3X3 team did not progress past the Western Region in the previous games due to lack of experience. As a result, the 3X3 players have been trained from scratch for this year's games. However, Butere Girls High School has chosen to focus solely on the 5X5 version of the game, choosing not to defend the 3X3 title they won last year.
Butere Girls High School is not alone in Kenya's girls basketball lineup for the FEASSSA games. Buruburu, St Joseph's Girls High School Kitale, and Olympic High School are also part of the Kenyan contingent. Buruburu was the best performing Kenyan side at the 2023 FEASSSA games.
The games are scheduled for August 14-23 in Kakamega, Kenya. Butere Girls High School, confident of success, will be aiming to reclaim the FEASSSA title they last won in 2016. The team has already achieved their first goal of retaining the national title, and they will be looking to add the East Africa title to their list of achievements.
Meanwhile, Kaya Tiwi is the last Kenyan side to win the FEASSSA trophy, finishing sixth and seventh respectively at the 2023 games. As Butere Girls High School prepares for the East Africa challenge, they will be looking to break Kaya Tiwi's streak and bring the trophy back to Kenya.
The Butere Girls High School basketball team, aiming to reclaim the East Africa FEASSSA title they last won in 2016, is focusing all efforts on the 5X5 team in the upcoming games. Coach Odeke's strategic decision is essential for cohesion and peak performance, as the team gears up for the regional competition.
