Earth's second-largest nation confronts a decisive dilemma

🇨🇦 Ready for a change, Canada?

On Monday, Canadians residing in the Earth's second-largest country by area are making their way to the polls to decide who'll lead the country for the next few years.

The polls are neck-and-neck between the Liberals, spearheaded by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the Conservatives, led by their new leader, Pierre Poilievre. The early results are expected in the wee hours of Tuesday (CET).

While the Conservatives seemed unbeatable in the polls, economic expert Trudeau gained unexpected traction following aggressive trade policies and annexation threats from US President Donald Trump.

Trudeau is advocating for closer ties with Europe and Asia to lessen Canada's dependence on the US. On the other hand, Poilievre prioritizes low taxes and public spending cuts, with his politics heavily influenced by Trump, a stance that seems to have lost favor among Canadians amidst the US-Canada conflict.

Both parties are aiming for an absolute majority, meaning at least 172 seats in the parliament in the capital Ottawa. If a minority government were to become necessary, either Trudeau or Poilievre would need the support of smaller parties like the Social Democrats, the Greens, or the regional Bloc Québécois party.

Sadly, the election is taking place amidst the aftermath of a tragic incident in Vancouver, a major city on the west coast. A car drove into a crowd at a Filipino community street festival, resulting in at least nine deaths. A 30-year-old suspect was arrested, and police believe it was not a terrorist act.

Hopefully, Canadians can come together, put aside their differences, and choose the leader that'll guide the nation towards peace, prosperity, and unity.
