Vogtland Shakes Due to Earthquakes

The Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture, and Geology (LfULG) confirmed two earthquakes at 7:49 a.m. and 1:43 p.m. The tremors, measured on the Richter scale, had magnitudes of 2.6 each.

In the press release, a swarm of earthquakes was noted in the area between Kraclice and Luby in the northwest of the Czech Republic since November 1. Seven of these quakes surpassed a magnitude of 2.0.

The shocks were felt in Markneukirchen, a Vogtland town ten kilometers west, and beyond, with reports of tremors even reaching Grünhain-Beierfeld (Erzgebirge), 45 kilometers away. However, an LfULG spokesperson assured, "Damage is not expected with quakes of this magnitude."

Swarm earthquakes, a series of quakes happening in a short span, are common in Vogtland's Saxony region and northwestern Bohemia in the Czech Republic. The latest significant earthquake swarms occurred from May to August 2014, in July 2017, and in May 2018. Smaller swarms were noted between Christmas and New Year's Eve 2021.

  1. The local residents in Plauen, a Vogtland city, reported feeling the tremors caused by the earthquakes.
  2. Fortunately, the chestnut fair in Plauen, a popular event in the region, escaped unscathed despite the seismic activity impacting the region.
  3. Given the ongoing earthquakes in Vogtland, placid Chemnitz, located in Saxony, has attracted visitors seeking a break from the seismic activity.
