World Health Organization Pledges Support After Earthquake in Turkey

The World Health Organization (WHO) has pledged its support and expressed readiness to assist Turkey following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the Sindirgi district in Balikesir province on August 11, 2025.

According to initial reports, the earthquake resulted in the death of an 81-year-old citizen and injured 29 others, none of whom are in life-threatening condition. The disaster caused 16 buildings to collapse across 68 neighborhoods, with ongoing monitoring of aftershocks by emergency teams.

As of now, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency has not requested international assistance, but the WHO remains prepared to support health care delivery to the injured and affected communities.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO chief, conveyed his solidarity with those affected by the earthquake, writing about the disaster on an unspecified date.

Past earthquakes in Turkey have revealed significant challenges in medical response logistics, with delayed emergency assistance, overwhelmed healthcare systems, and reliance on makeshift clinics. This context suggests that WHO’s readiness to assist is important for potential support.

However, as of August 21, 2025, no newer detailed assessment beyond initial damage reports or ongoing international aid operations from the WHO has been publicly documented.

The exact cause of the earthquake remains unknown. The earthquake's depth was 11 kilometers.

The WHO's readiness to assist in relief efforts underscores the organization's commitment to supporting communities in need during times of crisis. The organization's expertise in health care delivery and disaster response will be crucial in ensuring the well-being of those affected by the earthquake in Turkey.
