Earthquake Hits Rydułtowy Mine: Emergency Response in Progress

Shake, rattle, and roll – that's what the Rydułtowy mine in Rybnik experienced on a typical Thursday morning! According to the Polish Mining Group (PGG), an earthquake-like seismic event struck the mine at 8:16 AM local time, disrupting the work of a crew of 68 miners.

The tremor, measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale, sent 15 miners scurrying to the surface immediately following the quake. Of those, 10 were transported to hospitals with stable conditions, while the remaining miners are being evaluated for potential injuries. Two miners have yet to make contact with rescue teams.

In the wake of the seismic activity, 10 rescue squads have been dispatched to the scene, with helicopters from the Air Ambulance Service lending a hand in the emergency response. With safety as their top priority, PGG warns of the possibility of additional collapses or fires in the affected area, where communication with 12 miners appears to have been initially severed.

Rawicki, Director of the Department of Underground and Open-Pit Mining at the Higher Mining Office, expressed concerns over the severe damage inflicted on the mine's underground infrastructure by the energy-packed tremor. He noted that the incident is comparable to a medium-sized earthquake, and rescue teams are working diligently, carefully monitoring the conditions to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

To manage the growing crowd of anxious family members, the Wodzisław Śląski police department has stepped in to maintain order at the site and keep access routes clear for emergency services. Despite the potentially grave situation, there have been no reports of fatalities as of yet.

Looking back, the Rydułtowy mine has faced its fair share of challenges over the years, including a 2006 methane explosion (resulting in five deaths) and a 2011 quake (without any fatalities). unfortunatley, this event could very well be another dark chapter in the mine's history.
