The elusive golden jackal on Sylt, the North Sea island, has kept hunters hot on its trail even past sunset. "We've got some stand hunts going and scattered ourselves in Lister Koog and on the Ellenbogen, where we numbered twelve hunters," said Thomas Diedrichsen, the expedition's mastermind, to the German Press Agency (dpa).

Now, hunters are additionally posted on high seats at various locations across the island at nighttime. "Our discovery is intriguing; the jackal doesn't get started with dusk, but around ten o'clock - it's still daylight on Sylt at that hour," he added. Consequently, hunters are now setting up their posts earlier in the evening. "But it doesn't matter if we don't know its location," the Sylt hunter exclaimed.

A local veterinarian reportedly laid eyes on the jackal in Rantum on Sunday, as per Diedrichsen. No further reports of slaughtered sheep or lambs have been received since Friday night.

Sylt's hunting association consists of ten districts, approximately 120 members in total. Approximately 20 to 30 individuals are currently involved in the hunt on the roughly 99-square-kilometer island. Beyond high seats, other methods are also being employed to locate the animal. The hunter, however, wishes to remain anonymous to prevent any potential disruptions.

Despite this, Diedrichsen maintains optimism for a successful hunt: "I hope we won't need to go on hunting this animal until the end of July."

Since May 19, the animal has claimed the lives of 90 sheep and lambs on the island. The Schleswig-Holstein environmental agency then issued an exemption permit for its hunting, which became effective on June 5 and will expire on July 31, making it the first confirmed hunting attempt of a golden jackal in Germany, according to the German Hunting Association (DJV).

Hunters in Sylt's community have adjusted their policy, starting their posts earlier in the evening for the golden jackal hunt, as the nocturnal creature is active around ten o'clock, even though it's still daylight. Furthermore, to enhance their efforts, the hunters are utilizing various locations for vocational training in spotting the elusive golden jackal, employing methods such as high seats and other techniques.
