Early Initiation of Search Operation for Sylt Jackal - Early commencement of the quest for Sylt-Chakal

The elusive golden jackal remains on the loose on Sylt island, inspiring passionate hunters to stake their claim against the nocturnal predator. According to Thomas Diedrichsen, deputy head of the hunting association on Sylt, a dozen hunters have been stationed in strategic locations, including Lister Koog and the Ellenbogen, as part of the ongoing hunt.

The hunters, who are now carefully positioning themselves earlier in the evening, have gleaned valuable insight about their quarry - the jackal is less active at dusk and emerges around 10:15 PM, even under the broad daylight on Sylt. They believe that knowing the jackal's routine is key to success, but locating the animal remains the primary challenge.

A veterinarian recently reported sighting the jackal in the town of Rantum, according to Diedrichsen. There have been no reports of sheep or lambs killed since Friday night. The hunting association on Sylt is made up of ten districts, boasting around 120 hunters. Approximately 20 to 30 of them are involved in the ongoing hunt on the roughly 99-square kilometer island.

While the hunting methods have not been disclosed publicly to avoid disturbances, a range of tactics are employed to locate the animal. Diedrichsen remains optimistic, predicting, "I hope it won't take until the end of July to catch the animal."

The golden jackal, which has been responsible for the deaths of 90 sheep and lambs since May 19, prompted the issuance of an exemption permit by the State Office for the Environment in Schleswig-Holstein. This permit, valid from June 5, allows for shooting and is set to expire on July 31. If successful, this would represent the first documented shooting of a golden jackal in Germany, as per the German Hunting Association (DJV).
