Eagerly Anticipating Homecoming: Blitzboks Prepared for SVNS Cape Town Tournament

Blitzboks on Fire for SVNS Cape Town Homecoming

South Africa's Olympic bronze medalists, the Blitzboks, are pumped and ready to shake things up at the highly-anticipated HSBC SVNS Cape Town event at DHL Stadium on the 7th and 8th of December. That's according to local sports journalist, Quintin van Jaarsveld.

Last season, the Blitzboks encountered a disastrous run in the HSBC SVNS series, crashing to a woeful seventh-place finish, missing out on automatic qualification for the Olympic Games. However, midway through the series, Philip Snyman took over as head coach and rallied the troops when they were backed against the wall. With their backs to the wall, they clinched the Repechage tournament in Monaco in July, securing their spot at the Paris Olympics.

Snyman's squad now aims to reclaim South Africa's former glory in the HSBC SVNS series. Expect an even bigger and louder homecoming than usual for the Blitzboks, who haven't played on home soil since their Olympic triumph.

HSBC SVNS Cape Town is a unique sports spectacle, a fusion of high-quality rugby action and world-class entertainment, all under the majestic watch of Table Mountain. The event is proudly South African, with top-notch performances lined up to delight the fans.

Cape Town's own two-time world hip-hop champions, Street Stylers, have invited fans to join their world group dancing record attempt based on the "Amapiano NoDNA JustRSA" dance, which has amassed over 15 million views on social media.

The HSBC SVNS series consists of seven iconic destinations, with each event showcasing the 12 best men's and women's teams. The series culminates in a Grand Final weekend on 3rd and 4th May in Las Vegas, where the top eight teams will battle it out to be crowned series champions.

Teams ranked ninth to 12th will face off against the top four teams from the Challenger Series in a relegation play-off to secure their place in next year's edition. Three new teams have joined the lineup this year, with Kenya and Uruguay men, and China women earning promotion from the Challenger Series.

The men's teams feature South Africa, Argentina, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, defending champions France, Fiji, Great Britain, USA, Spain, Uruguay, and Kenya. The women's sides include defending champions Australia, Olympic champions New Zealand, France, USA, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Great Britain, Japan, Brazil, Spain, and China.

Coached by Snyman until the end of the 2028 Olympic Games cycle, the Blitzboks have named a balanced and energetic squad, with Impi Visser and Zain Davids serving as co-captains. The hosts are eager to end their Cape Town drought, having last won their home tournament in 2015 against Argentina. Given their impressive Paris Olympics performance, strong squad, and home crowd support, the Blitzboks are worth backing.
