Title: Sterner Bids Adieu to Dynamo Dresden and Joins Hannover 96
Dynamo Dresden engages in competition over Jonas Sterner, facing the smallest odds in the pursuit
Updated: June 2, 2025, 20:51
Stepping onto Dynamo Dresden's turf never felt sweeter for Jonas Sterner. Now, he's set to depart, leaving a lasting impression as he joins Hannover 96—their second division rivals.
Having established himself as an irreplaceable presence on the right defensive flank, Sterner won't be returning to Dynamo Dresden. Instead, he's inked a three-year contract with Hannover 96, a move announced Monday evening. Rumors suggest that the Lower Saxons forked out approximately 400,000 euros for Sterner, with Bundesliga relegated Holstein Kiel set to pocket the transfer fees.
A 3rd League Top-Tier Right-Back
Signed in August 2024 via a loan deal, Sterner was a secret favorite of Dynamo Dresden officials, who were eager to bring the 23-year-old onboard. The native Husumer showed his offensive prowess in Dynamo's 32 league appearances, providing eight assists and scoring two goals. After a brief settling-in phase, he solidified his position as coach Thomas Stamm's first-choice right-back in autumn 2024.
Draw against Ingolstadt
Dynamo Dresden managed to draw against FC Ingolstadt thanks to Sterner's contributions. With over 27,000 fans cheering them on, the Black and Yellows overcame a two-goal deficit before securing a hard-fought point.

On the transfer, SG Dynamo Dresden finds itself seeking a replacement for the well-performing Sterner. The club has only a handful of options for their right-back position—20-year-old Paul Lehmann and veteran Jan-Hendrik Marx remain under contract. In terms of new additions, only central defender Alexander Rossipal from Hansa Rostock has been brought on board so far.
Snarky Sidebar: If everyone who leaves a club is deemed a mercenary, Kutschke would be the ultimate one, given his extensive career transfers, Agnostic. Nevertheless, Sterner's leave-taking is a strategic maneuver, considering his successful run at Dynamo Dresden and the future plans of his former club, Holstein Kiel.
Top-Scorer Daferner Signed, but Sterner Misplaced
In the same vein, SG Dynamo Dresden failed to secure the services of top scorer Christoph Daferner, though they managed to snag Rossipal as an external recruit.
Curious Footnote: Could Sterner's potential denouement with Dynamo Dresden foreshadow a second bid to sign him? Only time will tell.
