Dwayne Johnson's Maui returns in Disney's live-action Moana—but with a bold new look
Disney's live-action Moana is set to hit cinemas on 10 July. The film brings back Dwayne Johnson as the demi-god Maui, a role he first voiced in the 2016 animated version. This time, the production focuses on honouring Polynesian culture while adapting the beloved story for live audiences.
The trailer for the live-action remake has already been released, sparking discussions among fans. Many have reacted to the new design of Maui, which differs from the animated version. Johnson, who feels a deep responsibility to represent Polynesian heritage accurately, worked closely with costume and makeup teams to refine the character's appearance.
Preparation for the role was less physically demanding than Johnson's past action films. Instead of extreme muscle gain, the team used prosthetics and CGI to enhance his Polynesian tattoos and demi-god physique. He did, however, gain and maintain 40-50 pounds for the part. The actor also faced challenges with the heavy prosthetics, body suit, and a wig that weighed seven pounds more when wet. The film aims to stay true to Polynesian traditions, both in storytelling and visual representation. Johnson has emphasised the importance of cultural respect throughout the production process.
The live-action Moana arrives in theatres next summer, offering a fresh take on a well-known tale. Johnson's portrayal of Maui, supported by detailed prosthetics and CGI, will be a key feature.
