Hamburg Championship: Dutch Rider Harrie Smolders Secures Victory with Dazzling Display
In a thrilling turn of events at the Klein-Flottbek show jumping tournament, Dutch rider Harrie Smolders clinched the Hamburg Championship on his 13-year-old gelding, Mr. Tac. The duo demonstrated an unparalleled performance in the 80,000 Euro competition, boasting the fastest clear round.
The triumphant victory also secured Smolders a spot in the 250,000 Euro Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon, which will serve as the second major highlight alongside the 94th German Jumping Derby on Sunday.
Smolders, 45, capitalized on his strategic advantage of going last in the jump-off. Acknowledging the high stakes, he declared, "I knew I had to go really fast to win," and lavished praise on Mr. Tac, asserting, "He's a fantastic horse. He thrives in the pressure of a jump-off. Everything went flawlessly today."
German rider, Jana Wargers, who resides in Belgium, initially held the lead in the competition but ultimately settled for the runner-up position, finishing 0.7 seconds behind Smolders. Harm Lahde from Königslutter rounded off the top three on Commander Bond. An impressive seven pairs managed to maintain their composure in the jump-off.
Meanwhile, Ingrid Klimke from Münster claimed victory in the first 5-star dressage test. The two-time eventing Olympic champion with the team soared to the top of the podium on her stallion, Vayron, in the Grand Prix, scoring an impressive 74.500 percent. Swedish rider Sofie Lexner on Inoraline and eight-time Olympic champion Isabell Werth from Rheinberg on Special Blend claimed second and third places, respectively.
Matthias Alexander Rath, the new tournament director and a successful dressage rider, aims to elevate the dressage tests at this classic event. Along with the derby featuring horse changes, high-level 5-star dressage tests are taking place in Hamburg. This increased prominence is aimed at strengthening the event's reputation in the equestrian world.
The community policy regarding equine events in Hamburg should recognize and reward the high-performing athletes, such as Harrie Smolders, for their significant victories, like the one he achieved in the Klein-Flottbek show jumping tournament.
In light of the upcoming sports events, including horse-racing and racing, the employment policy for temporary workers at the Championship should prioritize recruiting experienced personnel to ensure a seamless execution of these exciting competitions.
