The European Championship for women's hockey saw a familiar tale unfold as the Netherlands, a top-favourite, defeated Germany 5-1 in a closely contested match at the Mönchengladbach Hockey Park. The game, scheduled for Wednesday at 8:00 PM, was broadcast on Magenta TV.

The Dutch team started the game with a bang, scoring just 35 seconds into the match through Freeke Moes. The German team, missing key players Sonja Zimmermann and Felicia Wiedermann due to injuries, struggled to keep up with the title favourites.

Lena Micheel scored a consolation goal for Germany from a penalty corner, but it was not enough to threaten the Dutch team's dominance. Frederique Matla, Pien Sanders (twice), and Marijn Veen (twice) also found the back of the net for the Netherlands, ensuring a comfortable win for the team.

The Dutch team, currently leading the group A table with seven points, has been waiting for a win against the record winner, Germany, for 18 years. This victory marks their fifth consecutive European title and their 13th overall in this tournament which began in 1984.

The German team, despite a valiant effort, could not overcome the psychological and performance edge that the Dutch team has held over them in crucial matches such as finals. This pattern was reinforced in the 2025 final in Germany, where the Dutch team narrowly defeated the host Germans.

Interestingly, the German men's hockey team recently broke Dutch dominance by winning the 2025 men's European title for the first time since 2013, defeating the Netherlands in a shootout. However, on the women's side, the Dutch team has maintained overwhelming superiority over Germany and other European teams for many years.

The German team's next challenge is a must-win game against Ireland in their final group game. A victory is necessary for them to qualify for the semi-finals. France, currently in second place in group A with three points, will play against the Netherlands in the last matchday.
