Germany and the Netherlands Draw in Thrilling European Men's Field Hockey Championship Match
The 2021 European Men's Field Hockey Championship match between Germany and the Netherlands ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation time, setting the stage for a dramatic final quarter and a tense penalty shootout.
The game, played in Mönchengladbach, Germany, saw Lena Micheel score the only goal for the German team in the 19th minute of the game from a penalty corner. Tijmen Reyenga scored first for the Netherlands just minutes into the game, and Freeke Moes opened the scoring for the Dutch team just 35 seconds into the match.
The second half of the game was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find the back of the net. However, Justus Weigand equalized for Germany in the final quarter, setting the stage for an exciting finish.
The match went to a penalty shootout, where Germany's goalkeeper Jean Danneberg made crucial saves to help secure a 4-1 victory for Germany. This victory ended Germany's 12-year wait for a European title and gave them their eighth overall.
This match was a rematch of previous European Championship finals where the Netherlands had prevailed, including in 2015 and 2021. However, the 2021 final win was significant for Germany as they defeated a long-time rival and Olympic finalist in a dramatic finish.
In the women's championship, no results for a 2021 match between Germany and the Netherlands were found. In the men's competition, the Dutch national hockey team currently leads Group A with six points, while Germany and France are in second and third place with three points each.
The German hockey team won their opening game against France 4:1, but struggled against the Netherlands, suffering a 1:5 defeat in the second European Championship game. The Dutch team's last win against the German team at a European Championship was 18 years ago.
The Netherlands remains the big bogeyman for the German hockey players, with Pien Sanders playing her 150th international match during the game against Germany. The score ended 5:1 in favor of the Netherlands, with Frederique Matla and captain Pien Sanders also scoring for the Dutch team.
Looking ahead, the German hockey team needs to win their final group game against Ireland to still make it to the semi-finals of the European Championship. The final group game between Germany and Ireland will be played on Wednesday at 8:00 PM and will be broadcast on Magenta TV. The Netherlands and France will play each other in the final game of Group A.
