Dutch hockey players are noticeably underperforming compared to their German counterparts
The Dutch women's hockey team secured the title of the 2025 EuroHockey Championship, defeating the German team in an intense final match. The game, played at the Mönchengladbach Hockey Park, saw the Dutch team emerging victorious with a score of 2:1.
The Dutch team had a promising start, with Freeke Moes scoring just 35 seconds into the game, a goal that was achieved without the Schopman team even touching the ball once. The early lead was further bolstered in the first quarter, as Frederique Matla and captain Pien Sanders added to the score, making it 3:0 for the favourites.
The German team, despite being without key players Sonja Zimmermann and Felicia Wiedermann due to injury, tried to threaten the title favourite. However, they could not match the Dutch team's dominance. Lena Micheel scored a consolation goal for Germany from a penalty corner in the 19th minute, but it was not enough to turn the tide.
Marijn Veen scored the 5:1 for the Dutch team in the final phase of the game, and Pien Sanders added another before the break to make it 4:1. Sanders was playing her 150th international game during the match.
Germany's journey to the final was not without its challenges. In the semi-finals, they faced Belgium and managed to advance after a 1-1 draw, winning 3-2 in a shootout.
Despite the defeat, the German team can be proud of their performance, finishing as runners-up in the championship. The Netherlands and France will meet in the last matchday of the group stage, a game that could determine the final group standings.
The Dutch women's hockey team, who have been waiting for a win against the German team for 18 years, remain the top favourites in the European Championship, despite the defeat against Germany in this final match. The defending champion of the European Championship leads the group A table with six points, while Germany and France have three points each in the group standings.
