Young Politician Lisa Schubert Takes Seat in German Bundestag

Lisa "Lizzy" Schubert, a 22-year-old politician from Düsseldorf, has made history by becoming the youngest member of the German Bundestag. Schubert, who identifies as non-binary, succeeded Uwe Foullong after his resignation due to health reasons.

Schubert represents the Left party (Die Linke) and is known for her strong emphasis on social justice, feminism, and peace. Her feminism goes beyond gender equality, aiming to dismantle patriarchal structures in various aspects of life, including the workplace, society, and politics. Schubert is also vocal about supporting Palestine as part of her political agenda.

Schubert entered the Left party after Sahra Wagenknecht's departure and ran in the 2025 federal election in North Rhine-Westphalia. She placed fifth in her district with 9.3% of the vote.

In the Bundestag, Schubert intends to stand up for a society that leaves no one behind and be a voice for those who are not heard or deliberately silenced. She aims to fight for an alternative to the current chronic crisis.

Schubert is next in line on the North Rhine-Westphalia state list and will take the place of Uwe Foullong. She expressed her gratitude towards Foullong for his commitment and wished him a speedy recovery.

Joining Schubert in the Bundestag from Düsseldorf are Thomas Jazombek, Johannes Winkel, and Sara Nanni. Schubert's election increases the proportion of women in her party in the Bundestag, with the current percentage being 56.2%.

Schubert is studying social sciences at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and is committed to continuing her work in the Bundestag.
