Young Politician Lisa Schubert Elected to German Bundestag

In a historic election, 22-year-old Lisa Schubert has been elected as a representative for Düsseldorf in the German Bundestag. Schubert, a student of social sciences at Heinrich Heine University, will fill the vacancy left by Uwe Foullong's resignation due to health reasons.

Schubert, a member of Die Linke party, is the first openly non-binary member of the Bundestag. She is notable for her clear political platform, which emphasizes opposition to patriarchal societal systems, advocacy for queer rights, and political support for Palestinian causes.

The young politician aims to be a voice for those who are not heard or deliberately silenced in the Bundestag and stands up for a society that leaves no one behind. She expressed gratitude towards Foullong for his commitment and noted that she will continue to fight for an alternative to the current chronic crisis in the Bundestag.

With Schubert's election, the proportion of women in Die Linke has increased to 56.2%. She will be the youngest member of the current legislative period and joins Luke Hoß and Zada Salihovic, also from Die Linke, as the three youngest representatives in the German Bundestag.

The election took place on February 23, 2023, but the specific date when Schubert will take office remains undisclosed. Foullong, who won a seat in the Bundestag for Die Linke in the Bottrop/Recklinghausen III constituency, also hailed from the party.

Schubert received 9.8% of the first votes in the election in the Düsseldorf II constituency. Thomas Jazombek, Johannes Winkel (both CDU), and Sara Nanni (Greens) were also elected as Düsseldorf representatives in the Bundestag.
