Nancy Faeser, the Interior Minister of Germany, visited Düsseldorf on Monday to discuss concepts for security in the city's old town. The purpose of the visit was to find solutions to the issues that have arisen during New Year's Eve celebrations.

The discussion revolved around the firecracker ban in Düsseldorf on New Year's Eve, with the SPD proposing a multi-level concept for New Year's Eve celebrations, including a central, family-friendly offer and control points. Martin Volkenrath, spokesperson for the SPD delegation, praised Düsseldorf's balanced security concept and stated that security in the old town has improved.

During the tour, the group passed by Heinrich Heine's birthplace. Nancy Faeser praised the city's efforts to maintain its rich history while ensuring safety for its residents and visitors.

The visit was not for Mayor Keller, but for the SPD delegation. However, the city administration and the police are jointly responsible for the "Safety in Düsseldorf's city center" project. The precise individual or body responsible for the project is not readily available, as such projects are usually a shared responsibility among several institutions.

The project involves coordinating measures between the city administration, police, businesses, restaurants, and the local community. The focus is on prevention, intervention, communication, and evaluation of measures taken to maintain order in the old town.

In addition, a prevention officer or prevention council is often appointed to oversee the measures. The Mayor for Order and Safety also plays an important role.

The old town is already monitored by video cameras, and the police are on duty in the area on weekends with four-person teams. The street workers of the "Safety in Düsseldorf's city center" project, who focus on the critical target group of young men, have had their work positively evaluated across party lines.

Nancy Faeser rejected the petition demanding a firecracker ban, stating that the majority of the population celebrates peacefully. She also criticized populist reporting on New Year's Eve and emphasized the need for adequate staffing to ensure regulations are followed, with the goal of making it fun to celebrate New Year's Eve in the old town again.

Violence problems in the old town usually increase after 2 am. However, knife fights are more common outside the old town, such as at Worringer Platz. Involving caterers and property owners in security measures is crucial to prevent an increase in kiosks and 'Ballermann' locations.

Around two million signatures from a petition demanding a firecracker ban were handed over to the Interior Ministry in Berlin. Despite this, Nancy Faeser emphasized the importance of finding a balanced solution that ensures safety while maintaining the festive atmosphere of New Year's Eve celebrations in Düsseldorf's old town.
