Uniper Düsseldorf Marathon 2022: A Successful Return
After a six-year hiatus, the city of Düsseldorf played host to the much-anticipated Uniper Düsseldorf Marathon on a sunny day in April. Over 250,000 spectators gathered to cheer on the participants, who included runners from all around the world.
The starting area for the half marathon, marathon, and relay runners was at the Joseph Beuys Ufer. A total of 14,350 participants took part in the marathon, with 6,000 half marathoners setting off from the same location.
In the men's category, Alex Maier from the USA clinched the victory, completing the 42.195-kilometer marathon in an impressive time of 2:08:33. This not only secured him the top spot but also set a new personal best for the athlete. The "Four Wins" relay team, which included Mayor Keller as the final runner, finished in 3:57 hours and managed to stay under the four-hour mark.
In the women's category, Leah Cheruto from Kenya triumphed, crossing the finish line in 2:25:23. This was not only a win for Cheruto but also a new personal best for the Kenyan athlete.
Meanwhile, in the Kids' Cups event, 121 children participated. The event catered to children aged between 2018 and 2023, with a total of 166 children completing a two-kilometer course at the Lower Rhine Embankment. Additionally, 76 children and young people ran a four-kilometer course.
The event organizer, Sonja Oberem, expressed her satisfaction with the marathon, praising the team and volunteers who made the event possible.
