In recent developments, Telegram's chief, Pavel Durov, a Russian-French national, was granted temporary freedom after being held in custody at Le Bourget Airport in Paris. The French authorities accuse Durov of failing to adequately prevent Telegram from being involved in unlawful activities. Additionally, AFP reports suggest that Durov may have been involved in severe physical violence against one of his children.

Post detention, Durov was released on a €5 million bail, mandating him to report to the police twice a week and remain within French territory. The French authorities continue to closely monitor the situation due to Durov's ongoing investigation for insufficiently preventing illegal activities on the platform.

Following the arrest, calls for Durov to address the concerns surrounding the use of Telegram for potentially hazardous activities have surfaced.

Further into these allegations, Durov's detention in France was extended until August 28 by a French investigative judge. Investigations have been initiated against Durov due to alleged crimes including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and the promotion of terrorism. Russia has voiced concern, viewing the accusations as politically motivated and an attempt to restrict freedom of communication.

Telegram also received an infringement notice from Australia's online safety regulator, eSafety, due to failing to respond to a transparency reporting notice deadline within five months. With this delay, eSafety was unable to execute its duties under the Online Safety Act for nearly half a year.

Moreover, Durov faces charges in France for complicity in the distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) due to Telegram's inadequate response to such issues.

Terrorist organizations like Hamas and ISIS have utilized Telegram for coordinating activities and disseminating propaganda. The platform hosts approximately 1,500 channels operated by white supremacists, connecting nearly one million followers worldwide.

Telegram has been fined by eSafety and has announced plans to appeal the decision. The company contends that the penalty is unfair and disproportionate, maintaining that it successfully responded to all of eSafety’s questions last year, with no outstanding issues.

Global regulatory bodies are cracking down on platforms that fail to address online safety concerns, a trend that has placed additional pressure on Telegram to comply with international regulations while ensuring user privacy remains intact. The platform is under significant scrutiny for its role in facilitating illegal activities and its commitment to regulatory frameworks.
