During the Los Angeles demonstrations, four individuals of Mexican descent were taken into custody and subsequently expelled back to Mexico.

In the face of escalating immigration raids by U.S. authorities, Mexico's Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón De la Fuente has confirmed that the country will exhaust all legal and diplomatic avenues to defend the rights of its citizens threatened in the United States.

The recent raids, which have seen large numbers of Mexicans arrested and deported, have been a source of concern for the Mexican government. In 2025, Mexican citizens constitute the largest group arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with nearly 40,000 arrested in the first half of the year. Deportations occur at a record pace, with nearly 1,300 daily removals reported by late July 2025.

These raids have not been limited to border areas, with immigration enforcement taking place even in Kern County, California. This has resulted in aggressive tactics like vehicle vandalism and detentions without adequate legal access, sometimes leading to summary expulsions without hearings.

The impact of these raids has been far-reaching, particularly on mixed-status families. Raids that separate families where some members are U.S. citizens or legal residents and others are undocumented immigrants cause trauma and legal complications for these families.

In response to these concerns, Mexico has set up the Information and Assistance Center for Mexicans (CIAM) to help alleviate concerns surrounding the ICE raids. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 520-623-7874.

However, it's important to note that the deported individuals will not be able to receive some of the legal assistance that Mexico is providing to its citizens threatened in the United States.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has also urged protesters to demonstrate peacefully and condemned the violence on the streets of L.A., reiterating her message to protesters.

Mexico's Foreign Secretary has emphasised that the aim of these actions is to protect its nationals from abuses, ensure proper legal representation, and challenge arbitrary or mass deportations that disrupt families and communities. Conversations with American counterparts will continue to take place as the raids and protests continue.
