Durham Drama Festival Turns 50 with Nine New Plays and Industry Insights
Durham Drama Festival (DDF) is gearing up for a special celebration. In 2025, the festival marks its 50-year milestone, inviting alumni to reminisce and engage, while showcasing nine new student-written pieces across three university venues.
DDF's 50th edition runs from Sunday 16 to Saturday 22 February 2025. It will span three venues: Mount Oswald Hub, Mark Hillery Arts Centre, and Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre. The festival promises a packed programme, including a scratch night of comedy and short drama, late-night comedy gigs, and an exhibition honouring DDF's rich history.
The festival serves as a launchpad for aspiring theatre practitioners. In 2024, four out of six productions transferred to wider stages, including the National Student Drama Festival (NSDF) and the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe. Notably, Drama Teesside's performance of 'Love and Freindship' by Zara Stokes-Neustadt at DDF 2024 led to them winning the Buzz Goodbody Prize at NSDF 2024. To mark its golden anniversary, DDF will host expert panels offering professional advice and mentoring.
DDF's 50th celebration promises an exciting week of theatre, comedy, and industry insights. With nine new student-written pieces, it's set to be a memorable event for both alumni and newcomers. The festival concludes with an awards evening, capping off a week of outstanding student theatre.
