VfB Stuttgart Bid Farewell to Loanees Rieder and Touré
Two offensive loan players, Fabian Rieder and El Bilal Touré, are departing from DFB Cup winners VfB Stuttgart and returning to their parent clubs, Stade Rennes and Atalanta Bergamo respectively.
Swiss midfielder, Rieder, spent the 2024-2025 season at Stuttgart, making 21 appearances in the Bundesliga, a highlight being his involvement in the 5-1 win against Young Boys Bern in the Champions League. Sporting director, Fabian Wohlgemuth, expressed his appreciation for Rieder's short-lived tenure, stating that he "quickly found his feet" and demonstrated his quality in 33 competitive matches.
Touré, a 23-year-old forward, was limited by a metatarsal injury during his time with the Swabians. Nevertheless, before the setback, he scored a significant goal at Juventus Turin, which secured Stuttgart's first Champions League victory in 14 years. According to Wohlgemuth, Touré was "an important option" in the team's attack.
With the end of their loan spells and Stuttgart opting not to exercise purchase options for either player, both Rieder and Touré are heading back to their original clubs. The club now focuses on finding suitable replacements, with discussions underway regarding the possible signing of Lorenz Assignon from Rennes.
Stade Rennes will welcome back Rieder, hoping that his Bundesliga experience will augment their squad for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Atalanta Bergamo is expected to reevaluate Touré's role within the team following his return. The club's recent win in the Europa League could offer additional opportunities for players.
The departures of Rieder and Touré leave VfB Stuttgart looking for reinforcements, particularly in attack. Financial gains from their success in the DFB Pokal will facilitate new signings, ensuring the team remains competitive in the 2025-2026 season.
