Duke Nuka and Mika successfully seize control of the Polar Bear Enclosure at the Karlsruhe Zoo.

Mika and her mama Nuka venture into a expansive polar bear paradise at Karlsruhe Zoo!

Since Mika's birth last November, the two bears lived in a cozy but tight space. But now, they are exploring the Lauterberg area, which has been revamped for their enjoyment. This delightful new corner offers a lush green lawn, tree trunks for a natural climb, and deep, refreshing water pools.

Without a second thought, Nuka plunges into the water, where zoo curator Claudia Vollhardt had cleverly hidden some fish treats. Mika, on the other hand, is bursting with excitement but hasn't dipped her paws into the water just yet. The zoo staff made sure the water areas were made safe for young bears by adding helpful escape routes.

Run, swim, and play - it's all yours for now, Nuka and Mika!

Since poor ol' Kap is still in the keep, Nuka and Mika get to play in the entire enclosure for the time being. "Mika's now stepping into an entirely new world!" zoo director Matthias Reinschmidt beams.

As for our buddy Kap, the news is good. His health's been on the mend lately, and he's now been moved to a safer, cozier area in the inner enclosure. "Kap's doing alright, I'd say," says zoo spokesperson Timo Deible.

If you're curious about what this improved enclosure may look like, based on typical features found in expanded polar bear enclosures at major European zoos:

  • Increased space and naturalistic elements
  • Enrichment devices for mental and physical stimulation
  • Improved visitor experiences
  • Adaptations for the health and welfare of each bear

But don’t take my word for it, check out Karlsruhe Zoo’s official updates for the latest and most accurate information on Nuka, Mika, and Kap's new playground. Happy adventuring!

In their new expanded enclosure, Nuka and Mika can enjoy other activities besides exploring the Lauterberg area, such as playing in the water and exploring the naturalistic elements.

As Kap recovers in the inner enclosure, the improved playground offers Nuka and Mika increased space and enrichment devices for mental and physical stimulation.
